Microwork and Impact Sourcing Report Launch

March 1, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Please join the Global Center for Youth Employment for the launch of their new report on Microwork and Impact Sourcing. The report will be distributed and speakers will consider the potential of microwork and impact sourcing to help achieve global development goals.

An important consequence of the global digital economy has been the emergence of online work opportunities that can break down barriers of time, geography, market access, and social exclusion for millions of potential workers. The World Bank estimates that 48 million people worldwide are currently participating in online outsourcing and that the market will grow to between $15 billion and $25 billion by 2020.  Under a microwork model, online outsourcing service providers divide job tasks into small often hyper-specialized subtasks, distribute them to workers around the globe, and then reintegrate into the finished product.  When done within Impact Sourcing parameters, this model is well suited to disadvantaged, less skilled youth, and in particular, to young women and girls, as it offers adaptable and flexible work arrangements, while it requires minimal training and formal education.

The scaling of microwork has the potential to create additional jobs for disadvantaged youth in economical constrained environments. The Global Youth Employment and its members Banyan Global and Future Work Consulting
conducted a study of successful online outsourcing service providers and their client companies to develop a comprehensive analysis, map current trends, challenges, and success factors surrounding the implementation of microwork. The report includes interviews with
Microsoft, Pinterest, Ebay, Getty Images, Samasource, Digital Divide Data, IMerit, Daiprom, Cloud Factory, Rockefeller Foundation, MasterCard Foundation among others, and include insights from site visits to microwork centers in East Africa.
